Nematodes against ants

Biological control with Steinernema feltiae. The nematodes seek out the larvae in the ants’ nest and eliminate them. This stops the colony from growing and the nest moves away.

Season April – October Soil temperature above 10 °C Results 2–3 weeks Storage 4–8 °C

Read this first

You may still see some adult ants after treatment. That is normal — the nematodes first tackle the larvae, after which the nest gradually moves away. Read this manual fully before you start.

Step by step

How to apply the nematodes

1

Moisten soil and nests first

Thoroughly wet the ant nests and the surrounding soil before treatment. In moist soil the nematodes move freely and swim quickly to the larvae. On dry soil they get stuck near the surface and dry out.

2

Storage until use

Store the nematodes in the fridge (4–8 °C) immediately after delivery, not in the freezer. Use them preferably within 2 weeks. Only prepare the mixture at the moment of treatment and use it directly afterwards.

3

Make the concentrate

  • First dissolve the nematodes in 1 litre of water, stir until there are no lumps left
  • Mixing ratio: 1 litre of water per m² (10 m² = 10 litres, 50 m² = 50 litres)
  • Spread the concentrate evenly over that total amount of water
Garden smaller than your pack?Mix to the size of your own garden. Pack for 100 m², garden of 50 m²? Fill 50 litres of water. Use it all (overdosing does no harm) or keep half of the powder dry and cool. Note: nematodes already dissolved in water must always be used immediately.
4

Apply

  • Pour the mixture generously into and around the nest openings and over the ant trails
  • Treat all visible nests at once — otherwise the ants relocate
  • Apply in the evening or on a cloudy day (nematodes are sensitive to UV light)
  • Not on a hard surface — the nematodes must be able to move into the ground
5

The right moment

  • Season: April to October, as long as the soil temperature is above 10 °C
  • Weather: just before or during rain is ideal
6

Aftercare

  • Keep the treated spots lightly moist for at least 2 weeks; water again in dry weather
  • Results usually appear after 2 to 3 weeks: the nest is abandoned
  • Still activity after 2 to 3 weeks? Repeat the treatment

ExampleGarden of 10 m² = 10 litres of water needed. A 5 litre watering can? Fill a 5 litre can twice and add half the concentrate to each can. That spreads all the nematodes evenly over the surface.
