What are nematodes and how do they work outdoors?
Nematodes are microscopic, living organisms that naturally occur in soil. They have been used for years as a biological way to control harmful insect larvae in gardens and lawns. Econema nematodes enter the larvae and stop them from the inside out. This happens naturally and is safe for plants, people, pets and the wider soil life.
Outdoors, nematodes work below the surface. Many pests spend most of their life cycle in the soil, where they damage roots and weaken grass. Applying nematodes evenly helps you target the problem at its source.
When should you use nematodes in garden and lawn?
Nematodes are used to control soil pests such as:
- chafer grubs
- leatherjackets
- larvae of various beetles and moths
Use nematodes when you notice poor growth, patches of dying grass, turf lifting easily, or signs of root damage. Starting early improves the chances of success.
Step 1 – Preparation
Good preparation makes a big difference.
- Lightly water the area before you start
- The soil should be moist, not saturated
- Avoid chemical pesticides before, during and after the treatment
Nematodes need moisture to move through the soil and reach the larvae.
Step 2 – Make the base mix
Dissolve the entire pack of nematodes in 1 litre of water.
- Stir gently but thoroughly
- Keep the nematodes evenly suspended in the water
- Let the mix stand for a few minutes
Use a full pack per treatment. Nematodes are living organisms and do not perform well when partially stored or handled incorrectly.
Step 3 – Dilute and apply
Mix the base mix with enough water to cover the area you want to treat.
Guideline for garden and lawn
- About 10 litres of diluted solution per 10 m²
Apply evenly using a watering can or sprayer without fine filters, so the nematodes are not damaged.
Best time to apply
Apply nematodes preferably:
- early in the morning, or
- later in the evening
Avoid strong sunlight and hot conditions. UV and drying reduce survival and effectiveness.
Step 4 – Aftercare and repeat if needed
After application, keep conditions favourable so the nematodes stay active.
- Keep the soil moist for 7 to 14 days
- Lightly water again if needed
- Do not use chemical treatments
You usually see the first improvement within 2 to 3 weeks.
If the pest pressure remains high, the treatment can be repeated after a few weeks.
Key tips for best results
- Ideal soil temperature: 10–25 °C
- Use nematodes as fresh as possible
- Store unopened packs in a cool place
- A higher dose than recommended can increase the chance of nematodes meeting the target pests, but correct and even application is still the most important factor
- Healthy soil structure and good maintenance help prevent reinfestation
Are nematodes safe for pets and children?
Yes. Nematodes are natural and harmless to people and animals.
Can I use nematodes together with fertiliser?
Yes, as long as the fertiliser does not contain chemical pesticides.
When will I see results?
Typically within 2 to 3 weeks. With heavy infestations it can take a little longer.
