Yew weevil trap with nematodes

Biological control of the vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus). The trap contains a substrate soaked with insect-parasitic nematodes. Weevils become infected as soon as they crawl underneath it.

Spring March – May Autumn Aug – October Soil temperature min. 5 °C Storage 4–8 °C

⚠ The most important thing

Always place the trap with the nematode side facing down. Only then do the weevils come into contact with the nematodes as they crawl underneath.

Instructions for use

How to place the trap

1

Place by the plant

Place the trap on the ground next to the affected plant, close to the stem or stem base.

2

Nematode side down

Place the trap with the nematode side facing down. That way the weevils become infected as they crawl underneath.

3

Press down firmly

Press the trap down lightly so it makes good contact with the ground.

4

Place in the evening

The vine weevil is nocturnal and looks for shelter during the day. So place the traps in the evening for preference.

When to use?

The trap works best in two periods:

  • Spring (March to May) — against overwintered weevils that become active as temperatures rise
  • Autumn (August to October) — against the new generation of weevils

The soil temperature must be at least 5 °C. The nematodes are most active between 12 °C and 25 °C.

Recognising the damage

The adult weevils eat typical semicircular notches from leaf edges at night. Ugly, but rarely life-threatening for the plant.

The real damage happens underground: the larvae feed on the roots. This leads to wilting, yellowing and ultimately the death of the plant.

Tips for the best result

Get more from the trap

  • Place the traps in the evening — the weevil is nocturnal
  • Check regularly that the trap is moist; sprinkle with water if needed
  • Combine the trap with pouring nematodes through the soil for a double approach
  • Use the traps as soon as possible after delivery

Safety

Completely safe

The nematodes are safe for people, pets, birds, bees and other beneficial insects. No safety interval, no environmental impact.

Storage

Keep in the fridge

Store the traps in their original packaging in the fridge at 4–8 °C. Not in the freezer. Use the traps as soon as possible after delivery for the best result.
